The trip to the dive site, by car, or bus, is a very pleasant one, great scenery, good road, most of the way.
From Marea Del Portillo, or Sierra Mar, 1 hour trip. From Santiago close to 3 hours, and extra $$$. The cost varies, depending on your starting location, and the diving center, $65.00 - $80.00, and more.
As seen in the photos, this is a shore dive, and VERY dependent on weather conditions. The ocean has to be near to calm to do it, especially if you have any extra gear, such as a camera.
The beach is mostly round
boulders,
that continue underwater. We dove this site a total of 14 times, by now, in
conditions, from oil calm water, to 10 foot surf, and it can be very easy,
or VERY rough. Please listen to, the
Cuban dive masters, from Sierra, and Marea, they have done this site hundred's of times, and will get you in and out just fine. I can't speak for the rest, but have seen Cuban instructors from other provinces, who needed help them selfs. This is not to scare anybody, just dive with the guys, that know this site well!!
From where you park the car, or usually bus, it's about 300 M. to the surf line. Once in the water, its about 20 M. off shore, where the wreck starts, at 10 M. depth continuing to 25 to 32 M.
The wreck is a 100 M. long Spanish armored battle cruiser, and it has it all, cannons, spent shells, ammunition, and naturally, is a reef by now, with lot's of fish, coral, sponges, etc.
If you are in this part of Cuba, or anywhere in Cuba, the Colon is a must dive!
Please keep in mind, the above are personal opinions. |
